Human usage of horseshoe crab eggs has always been primarily biomedical — health

 Their large, clear yolks are used to test the sterility of vaccines, drugs, and medical devices. It's important to test these dosages for sterility because infections from a contaminated injection could be fatal.


 In addition, horseshoe crab blood contains a clotting agent called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL), which is used to test for bacterial contamination in medical equipment like heart valves and IV needles. Four other species of horseshoe crabs are used to make a type of gelatin that is a key ingredient in some kinds of cosmetics.


The eggs are used by humans for a variety of things. On the east coast of the United States, the eggs are used as bait in crabbing. In Japan, the eggs are used as a treatment for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. 




Horseshoe Crab eggs are used for fertilization of other species of crabs. The eggs are carried from Delaware Bay to New Hampshire on board ships. The eggs are then shipped to labs. But it is a very long process and some eggs may get damaged in the process. 




But this procedure is mostly done by scientists!
